A bouquet can last a week or more with a few minutes of care. None of it is hard.
The basics
- Trim the stems. Cut about an inch off at an angle, under running water if you can.
- Use a clean vase. Bacteria shorten the life of cut flowers.
- Change the water. Every two days, and add the flower food that comes with the bouquet.
- Remove leaves below the waterline. They rot and cloud the water.
- Keep them cool. Away from direct sun, heaters, and ripening fruit.
- Recut when they droop. A fresh cut often revives them.
How long should they last?
Roses, lilies, and chrysanthemums last one to two weeks. Tulips and peonies last about five to seven days. Farm-direct flowers often last longer because they arrive in bud and open slowly.
